Station Two: The Cross is laid upon Him
Sunday, January 02, 2011

John 19: 16-17

Then he handed him over to them to be crucified. So they took Jesus, and carrying the cross himself he went out to what is called the Place of the Skull, in Hebrew, Golgotha.

Reflections for Prayer

Jesus bore the ultimate cross for the sake of humanity, just as we are asked to bear crosses in our everyday lives. Let us look to Fr. Pedro Arrupe, who in being "struck and shocked by the plights" of the Vietnamese Boat people in the wake of the war, founded Jesuit Refugee Service.

Fr. Arrupe allowed himself to be shaken by the darkness, and when given a cross, he did not turn away. By what or whom have we been "struck and shocked" and will we choose to bear this load?

Lord, may we be "struck and shocked by the plights" of brothers and sisters worldwide and follow in the steps of Fr. Arrupe as we humbly bear the cross that awareness brings.

Let us keep watch with You.
