|Our first event will be held on Thursday, March 31, on the CUA campus where Mitzi Schroeder, Policy Director for JRS/USA, will be discussing the many issues plaguing the soon-to-be independent nation of Southern Sudan and what we can do/are doing to help improve them.|
Jesuit Refugee Service/USA is pleased to begin working with the first JRS/USA Action Team, a group of talented, hardworking students at Catholic University of America. These students have committed to raising awareness, fundraising, and advocating for the newly formed nation of Southern Sudan in conjunction with JRS/USA. A message from the CUA Sudan Action Team:
On behalf of the Catholic University of America (CUA), in conjunction with Jesuit Refugee Service/USA (JRS/USA), we are excited to announce the creation of the CUA Sudan Action Team to increase awareness and advocate for the Peacekeeping efforts in South Sudan regarding economic sustainability and income generation.
Our mission statement:
The JRS/CUA Sudanese Action Team seeks to:
1.) Provide & promote awareness regarding the dire economic conditions of the new country of Southern Sudan (which has announced they will declare independence in July, 2011) through social media outlets such as Facebook & Twitter and informational events and brochures.
2.) Promote & establish a culture of Peace within Sudan through economic education with an emphasis on the role of women in income generation, money-saving and fiscal responsibility
3.) Raise money & awareness in the CUA community to jumpstart the economic sustainability of Southern Sudan
4.) Beyond the CUA community, we wish to engage with Congress to encourage US support to the newly formed nation of South Sudan, both in order to address present humanitarian needs and to support the stability and peaceful growth of this potential new ally and economic partner
Our first event will be held on Thursday, March 31, on the CUA campus where Mitzi Schroeder, Policy Director for JRS/USA, will be discussing the many issues plaguing the soon-to-be independent nation of Southern Sudan and what we can do/are doing to help improve them.
The following day, on Friday, April 1, we will be holding a fundraiser all day on campus to help support JRS’ income generation and sustainability projects in Southern Sudan. We will also advocate for Southern Sudan by sending letters to Senator John Kerry and Congressman Chris Smith and encouraging the CUA community to sign a petition calling for more action in aiding Southern Sudan.
Everyone is welcome to attend and we look forward to seeing and hearing from you!

— CUA Sudan Action Team
JRS Action Teams are groups of anywhere from three to 100 members that rally around their common concern for refugee and forcibly displaced persons, and their drive to effect positive social change in their local and global neighborhoods. These teams support JRS/USA’s advocacy efforts by forming a grassroots movement to inform, educate, and empower local communities to take action and demand responsible actions from the US government and beyond.
While teams vary in size, structure, and activities, they share the common goal to support JRS/USA’s advocacy efforts and refugee and forcibly displaced issues at large. Further, JRS Action Teams commit to meeting regularly and coordinating activities and events that promote a brighter future for our refugee brothers and sisters.
