(Washington, D.C.) November 16, 2011 — On October 29, student volunteers from the American/African Outreach Society (AAOS) of Jesuit College Preparatory School of Dallas partnered with Refugee Resources and volunteers from Jesuit’s sister school, Ursuline Academy of Dallas, to create a fun, festive Halloween evening with refugee children at Shiloh Village Apartments.

In the spirit of sharing a traditional Halloween experiences, the volunteers spent the day playing games with the children, including Halloween Bingo, a Mummy Wrap, and face painting. The wonderful evening ended on a cheerful note with “Trunk or Treat,” where AAOS volunteers handed out candy to the children from the trunks of their parents’ cars

Refugee Soccer Tournament

On November 5, the AAOS hosted a Refugee Soccer Tournament at Jesuit College Prep to raise funds for solar lanterns at Kakuma Refugee Camp in Kenya.

The refugee soccer team from Shiloh Village Apartments played the final match of the day against student-formed teams from Jesuit.

"We are extremely excited to share our school and this event with the Shiloh refugee soccer team," said AAOS fundraiser student chairman, James Bucklar. "The goal of the day was to invite the children of Shiloh to Jesuit for a fun-filled day of soccer competition," said Richard Perry, Director of Community Service at Jesuit.

Thirty-five local refugee children joined 200 Jesuit high school students in a successful tournament, raising $1125 to support JRS service to refugees in Kakuma.

The day's activities included parent-formed teams playing against Jesuit faculty, sibling fun teams and Shiloh's famous reading circle. AAOS was proud to sponsor this event, bringing more awareness to the mission of Jesuit Refugee Service/USA and enhancing awareness of refugee issues and support refugee students in reaching their educational goals.
