Faith and Joy in Haiti
June 15, 2010

Fr. Dorino Gabriel, S.J. talks about the work of Faith and Joy in helping to rebuild and revitalize Haiti.

Through the Jesuit Fe y Alegria school system Haitian Jesuits are working to promote universal education in Haiti, a key necessity in helping to build a resilient and sustainable Haitian-led recovery.

Fe y Alegria, or Faith and Joy, is an educational movement born in Venezuela in 1955 as a way to consolidate efforts that were being made to provide educational services in the slum zones of Caracas.

The work of the founder, Jesuit Father Jose Maria Velaz, and the collaboration of numerous people and organizations since, has resulted in the growth of Faith and Joy to more than 16 countries.

While two Faith and Joy schools already exist in the Haitian cities of Ouanaminthe and Balan, the Jesuits of Haiti plan to open 17 new education centers that will educate youth from economically disadvantaged backgrounds while providing teacher training to promote quality education.
