UPDATE: Thanks everyone for your support in helping defeat H.R. 4038!

(Washington, D.C.) January 19, 2016 — The U.S. Senate is poised to vote TOMORROW (Wednesday, January 20) on the American Security Against Foreign Enemies (SAFE) Act – H.R. 4038 – which would halt the resettlement of Syrian and Iraqi refugees in the U.S.

Jesuit Refugee Service/USA stands with partners in calling on the U.S. to retain its position as a leader in responding to the largest refugee crisis since World War II, by opposing any new restrictions on Syrians and Iraqis who are fleeing violence and terrorism.

Any comprehensive strategy to address the humanitarian crisis in Syria, and other parts of the globe, must include a secure, robust and effective domestic refugee resettlement program. The U.S. has a long, proud history of welcoming persecuted people. Rather than turn away from that history, we should honor it, considering it our moral obligation to help the most vulnerable of these refugees and provide them with a safe haven.

In Pope Francis' annual message recognizing the 2016 World Day of Migrants & Refugees on January 17, he urged us to meet the challenge of refugee hospitality with love. “The ability to overcome prejudice and fear is an essential ingredient for promoting the culture of encounter, in which we are not only prepared to give, but also to receive from others.”

Please take a moment today to urge your Senators to VOTE NO on H.R. 4038 and any legislation that would stop, pause or defund the resettlement of refugees. We must ensure that the U.S. continues to welcome the most vulnerable, including refugees.

Thank you for your time!
