JRS/USA Celebrates International Human Solidarity Day

Washington, D.C., 20 December 2017 —  In the TED Talk he gave this year, Pope Francis called on all of us to build and grow solidarity around the world. “We all need each other, none of us is an island, an autonomous and independent ‘I,’ separated from the other,” he said. “Everything is connected, and we need to restore our connections to a healthy state.” The UN has also recognized this need to build solidarity as one of the essential values critical to international relations in the twenty-first century, and has proclaimed today, December 20, as International Human Solidarity Day.

The spirit of solidarity has continuously helped define the work of JRS, as we uphold our obligation to our brothers and sisters who have been forced to flee their homes.

“Every day is a day to celebrate unity and diversity, but on International Human Solidarity Day, we recognize the importance of building relationships and connections with all of our brothers and sisters” said David Robinson, Jesuit Refugee Service/USA’s Executive Director. “The spirit of solidarity relies on the cooperation of each of us to solve international economic problems, societal issues, and improve cultural relations. We encourage everyone to take action. Work together and built on a foundation of global cooperation and solidarity to lift people out of poverty, hunger, and disease.”
