JRS/USA on the Legacy of Jimmy Carter
01 January 2025
As we reflect on the past few days and prepare to enter a new year, all at Jesuit Refugee Service/USA are thinking of former president Jimmy Carter, a man of deep faith who contributed throughout his public and personal life to advancing the common good. The world has lost one of its most dedicated and effective humanitarians.
Mr. Carter’s most significant act on behalf of forcibly displaced people, his signing of the Refugee Act of 1980, was in response to the urgent needs of Southeast Asian refugees fleeing the persecution, violence and political oppression that persisted in the wake of the Vietnam War – the same crisis that prompted Fr. Pedro Arrupe to found JRS.
We reflect on this shared history and dedication to assisting vulnerable people as we extend our prayers and deepest condolences to the Carter family.
