Protect the Rights of Refugees and Asylum Seekers to Reflect the Rule of Law

Protect the Rights of Refugees and Immigrants in the US

Earlier this week, we called on supporters to uphold the rule of law for refugees and immigrants around the world. In part two of this action alert, we turn our focus to legal protections within the United States that are under threat—and must be preserved.

Under US and international law, individuals fleeing violence and persecution have the right to seek asylum. US law also prohibits returning people to countries where they would face torture or threats to their freedom based on race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group.

But right now, these protections are at risk of being weakened or ignored.

We’re calling on Congress and the Administration to:

  • Restore access to legal representation for non-citizen minors in removal proceedings.
  • End the transfer of US residents facing deportation to foreign prisons with inhumane conditions.

The rule of law is only meaningful if it is upheld consistently—and for everyone. Raise your voice now.
